Class Description

Expanding Your Coping Capacity for Labor: A Natural Birth Pain Coping Class in San Francisco. Join a certified nurse midwife in this class practical and hands-on designed to help you increase your pain coping capacity for either an unmedicated, natural birth or laboring at home for as long as possible, waiting until you are in active labor to get ready to go to the hospital. Labor isn't something you survive — it's something you move through. You've done the reading. If you've even taken a childbirth class and you're looking for practical, hands-on ways to practice increasing your pain tolerance for labor. This workshop isn't about memorizing labor stages or reading about pain management techniques. It's about truly practicing pain management that lets you stay present, relaxed, and grounded when labor gets intense, using real labor pain coping techniques and breath awareness — instead of bracing, tensing, and waiting for it to be over. A relaxed pelvic floor can help with decreasing your changes of tearing during birth!

This workshop is for you if:

  • You've taken a birth class, or done some reading and learning on your own, and want to practice in-person with a midwife how to increase your pain tolerance and what to expect.
  • You're planning an unmedicated birth, want to labor at home as long as possible, or just want more natural pain management tools in your labor toolkit — whatever your birth plan may be.
  • You suspect there's more to birth prep than learning facts and memorizing information and are looking for a class to actually practice the techniques you've learned in childbirth prep.
  • You are a partner or support person who wants to help your birthing partner with techniques that will truly support them during labor.

Who this is for:

  • Mother/Birthing Person & Partner/Support Person
  • **Recommended to be taken 28-38 weeks gestation (third trimester) but all stages are welcome!
  • [Couples Class] - Recommended to take with partner/support person (please reserve a spot PER PERSON attending)

What's Included:

  • Exploration of preconceived ideas about pain/discomfort in labor/birth
  • Understanding how labor pain/discomfort is unique
  • Pain coping practices, including breath awareness
  • Hands-on and interactive learning for both birthing person and partner/support person
