Class Description

Newborn Care Class in San Francisco: Confidently navigate the first weeks of your newborn's life. Grounded in infant physiology and ancestral postpartum wisdom, this class gives new parents the essential frameworks needed to navigate the first weeks with baby smoothly. We'll cover five core pillars: what's happening in your newborn's body, feeding with confidence, tools to protect your family's rest and sleep, reading and responding to your baby's cries, and natural soothing and swaddling practices that work best for babies. This newborn care and parenting workshop helps eliminate the guesswork around diapering, bathing, and everyday newborn care, giving you the core knowledge and tools for the first tender weeks — and an easier transition into postpartum life.

Who this is for: Mother & Partner/Support Person [Couples class]
**Recommended to take during 20-38 weeks gestation (second or third trimester)

What's Included:

  • The First Week Home: newborn body basics (weight loss/gain, jaundice, cord care, skin changes), normal feeding patterns, and building caregiving rhythms that support your baby’s transition into the world
  • Feeding Your Newborn: lactation mechanics, colostrum to milk transition, responsive feeding vs. clock schedules, bottle introduction, paced feeding, pumping basics, and managing engorgement and clogged ducts
  • Maximizing Family Rest: newborn sleep biology, day/night confusion, contact napping, co-regulation, parental sleep logistics, and a practical overview of safe bed-sharing guidelines
  • Decoding Crying: classifying hunger, overstimulation, gas, and emotional release crying — plus a systematic soothing sequence and tools for managing your own nervous system in the hard moments
  • Soothing and Contact: The 5 S’s (Swaddling, Side/Stomach hold, Shushing, Swinging, Sucking), skin-to-skin science, babywearing basics, and why the first week calls for maximum holding

about the Facilitator

  • Amanda Scharpf

Amanda has been supporting families postpartum since 2019, offering a gentle grounded presence during a time that can feel both expansive and vulnerable. With a background in wellness and years of experience working with children and families, stepping into this role was a natural extension of who she is. Amanda brings patience, compassion, and a deep trust in the wisdom each family already carries —often reflecting that inner knowing back to parents as they find their own rhythm and way.

Amanda is passionate about being part of a larger shift in how we care for families—one where postpartum is associated with love, nourishment, and support, rather than depletion or isolation.
